The Development of U-Tapao Airport

Posted on 13 November 2012 by ABPC

U-Tapao International Airport is located close to Sattahip about 45 minutes drive south of Pattaya. It is both a Military Airport and a Civil Airport with more emphasis now being placed on its civil/commercial role.
In 2009 it was announced that there were major plans to develop the airport into a major, international gateway to Thailand and Pattaya in particular. Already there has been a large increase in domestic flights to Koh Samui and Phuket with further routes expected shortly to Chiang Mai and Udon Thani. The high speed rail link that is also planned between Pattaya and Bangkok will mean that the airport can reasonable hold the claims of being a major gateway to Thailand.

The number of flights going direct to U-Tapao from countries such as Russia and Korea has seen a massive influx in the numbers of these visitors to the Pattaya area with increased flights also planned from China and possibly India. Areas to the south of Pattaya such as Bang Saray and Na-Jomtien have seen massive increases in the number of visitors over the last 2 years with large increases in the number of condominium projects and housing villages being completed and planned with land prices rising at unprecedented speed.

The Bang Saray area in particular, with its beautiful, white, sandy shoreline has been very popular with Russian visitors. A number of top of the range housing projects are being built close to the beach, some selling for in the region of THB50 million. Projects and individual houses are also being built on the mountain side where stunning views looking back towards Pattaya and beyond are available.

It is not just the high end market that is being catered for. The airports expansion is also bringing many families who are looking for cheaper accommodation with smaller villages available along with condominiums starting in the region of THB1 million.

Obviously, just developing an airport does not bring visitors alone. To the South of Pattaya we have the award winning Nong Nooch Gardens, fantastic restaurants such as The Glasshouse and The View along with the development of the Cartoon Network water park that is sure to be popular with families. When this is taken into consideration with what Pattaya already has to offer, you can perhaps appreciate why the development of the airport is expected to be of such as commercial benefit to the area.
